11.3 Why no jobs?

“Jeanne,” Celeste moaned, “why can’t I find a job? It’s not like I want much – just my own little corner in cubicleland.”
Jeanne, always practical, smiled and said, “You know exactly why. You chose to study the subjects that interested you in college. Unfortunately, knowledge of art history and eastern philosophy isn’t high on the list of skills that companies are looking for.”
Celeste flopped onto Jeanne’s bed, the springs letting out a loud creaking groan. That not being dramatic enough, she proceeded to let out a long, put-upon sigh. “It’s not like I’m being terribly picky about where I’m applying. And we live in Boston, for God’s sake. There are plenty of companies out there; one of them must want me!”
Jeanne perched on the end of her bed, and started re-arranging the books and pictures on her night table. “You could apply at—.”
“No, don’t tell me again that I could temp.”
Jeanne looked a little annoyed at being interrupted, but let her continue.
“I know I could temp, and that’d give me some experience, and all the other hundreds of arguments for it.” Celeste sighed again. “Besides, I’ve submitted an application at all the temp companies, and I haven’t heard anything at all. And even besides that, I don’t want to temp. I want a real job, just like everybody else has. Ugh. You know all the jobs they give the temps just out of school involve nothing but distributing mail and answering the phone. Does that sound like fun? I don’t think so!”
“Well, actually what I was going to say was, you could apply at Disney. You did the college program there, and there are worse things in life than living in Florida. Think of how nice it would be to rub it in to everyone up here during the winter. I can image the phone calls now: Hi, Jeanne. Yeah, it’s too bad it’s snowing up there. It’s eighty degrees out here, and I’m just going out to the pool to lie out for a while. Uh-huh, that’s exactly the kind of thing you’d do.”
